How We Operate Muddy Waters Search & Recovery operates as a volunteer-based organization focused on supporting missing persons cases through coordinated search efforts, investigative assistance, and public outreach. Our process is built on structure, accountability, and respect for both families and the sensitivity of each case. 1. Case Intake & Review Every case begins with a submission from a family member, law enforcement contact, or verified tip source. Once received, we: Review the information for completeness and relevance Verify key details when possible Determine whether the case is suitable for our involvement based on safety, legality, and operational capacity We prioritize active and time-sensitive missing persons cases whenever possible. 2. Case Assessment & Planning After intake, our team conducts a structured review of the case. This may include: Timeline development Map and location analysis Open-source research and data collection Identification of search zones or points of interest At this stage, we determine what type of support is appropriate: Field search operation Remote investigative support Public awareness campaign Information gathering and tip monitoring 3. Coordination & Communication We maintain communication with: Families or reporting parties Volunteer team members External supporters or collaborating groups when applicable We ensure all communication is handled with professionalism, discretion, and respect for privacy. Families are updated as information develops, when appropriate and safe to share. 4. Field Search Operations When conditions allow and a search is approved, field operations may be deployed. These operations can include: Ground search teams Area canvassing and terrain assessment Drone or aerial observation (when available) Documentation of search progress and findings All search activities are conducted with safety, legality, and coordination as top priorities. We do not engage in unsafe or unauthorized entry into restricted areas. 5. Investigative Support Not all cases involve immediate field deployment. Some require structured investigative support. This may include: Reviewing public records and available data Building case timelines Mapping last known locations Analyzing tips and leads Identifying patterns or inconsistencies in available information This work helps strengthen the overall understanding of a case and can guide future search efforts. 6. Public Awareness & Outreach In many cases, visibility is critical. We may assist by: Sharing missing persons alerts Coordinating social media awareness efforts Publishing case summaries (with permission) Encouraging community tip submission Public awareness often plays a key role in generating new leads. 7. Fundraising & Operational Support MWSAR is supported through donations, fundraising events, and community contributions. All funds are used to support: Search equipment and tools Travel and operational costs Communication systems Case support infrastructure We strive to remain transparent in how resources are used to support active operations. 8. Case Closure & Follow-Up When a case reaches resolution or concludes active search efforts, we: Document findings and outcomes Provide updates when appropriate Support families in next steps when possible Retain case records for reference and continued awareness if needed Even after a case ends, we aim to ensure no family feels abandoned.
